weight pushing down on your truck
Short bed truck with a fifth wheel means you have a clearance problem. When you make sharp turns, the front of the trailer swings toward your cab. With a fixed hitch, you are limited in how tight you can turn before things start touching. The B&W Companion Slider fixes this by letting the hitch slide backward when you need the clearance.
This is the 20K version - 20,000 pounds towing capacity, 5,000 pounds pin weight. It mounts to Ford factory pucks just like the fixed Companion models. No drilling, no rails, no permanent changes. The slider mechanism adds some complexity but B&W kept the installation reasonable. Couple hours with basic tools and you are done.
The slide gives you 12 inches of travel. When you are driving straight down the highway, you keep the hitch forward so the weight sits over your rear axle where it belongs. When you pull into a tight campsite or gas station and need to make a sharp turn, you slide it back to give your trailer room to swing. Some people slide it manually before they need it, others wait until they feel the trailer getting close.
Everything else is standard Companion quality - articulating head that moves in all directions, one-inch thick jaws, polyurethane bushings for a quiet ride. Three height positions for leveling. Removes from the truck when you want your bed back.
If you have a short bed Ford and want to tow a fifth wheel, you probably need a slider. This is one of the best ones made. B&W builds it in Kansas and backs it with a real warranty.
