What we collect, and why.

We don't sell your data and we don't run ads. Most of this site works without you telling us anything. Here's everything we do collect. Last updated November 3, 2026.

What you tell us

  • Email list. If you sign up, we keep your email address and where on the site you signed up. We only use it to email you about StupidHitches: towing tips and site updates.
  • Saved results. If you email yourself your hitch results, we keep your email address, the truck and bed setup you entered, and the hitches that matched, so your saved-results link keeps working. Anyone you share that link with can open it. Saving your results also adds you to our email list.
  • Questions. If you ask a question on a guide or product page, we keep your first name, email address and question. Once it's answered, we publish your first name, your question and the answer on that page. We never publish your email address; it's only for telling you the answer is up.

There are no visitor accounts or passwords on this site.

What we collect automatically

  • Analytics. We use Google Analytics to see which pages get visited, roughly where visitors are, what devices they use and how they found us. We use Microsoft Clarity to see how people use our pages, such as where they click and how far they scroll, including recordings of visits. Both use cookies.
  • Buy-link clicks. When you click a "See Where to Buy" link, we record which link it was and where it sat on the page, the page you came from, your browser, device type and country, and a scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address. That tells us which pages actually help people, and lets us filter out bots. We delete clicks we flag as bots after 90 days.
  • Your visit. A session cookie keeps the site working between pages. For example, it remembers the truck you last looked up and protects our forms from abuse. Our server deletes the session record, which includes your IP address and browser, a few hours after your last page view.
  • Server logs. Like almost every website, our web server logs each request: IP address, page and browser. Those logs are deleted after about two weeks.

Cookies

We set two cookies of our own: the session cookie and a security cookie that protects forms. Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity set their own cookies to measure visits. We don't use advertising cookies, and we don't build ad profiles.

When you leave through a buy link, the retailer (Amazon, for example) may set its own cookies on its site so it can credit the sale to us. That's covered by the retailer's privacy policy, not this one.

Who else sees it

We don't sell your data. The only outside companies involved are the ones that help run the site:

  • Google runs Google Analytics and serves the fonts on our pages, so Google sees your IP address when the page loads. See Google's privacy policy.
  • Microsoft runs Clarity. See Microsoft's privacy statement.
  • Our hosting provider stores the site and its database on its servers.

We'll also hand over information if the law requires it.

Affiliate links

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. StupidHitches also earns commissions from other retailers' affiliate programs. When you buy through one of our links, the retailer pays us a small commission at no extra cost to you. Retailers only know you came from us; we never pass them your email or anything else you've given us. Here's how that works.

Your choices

  • You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and Google offers an opt-out add-on for Google Analytics. The hitch finder works without them.
  • Email us to see what we have about you, to correct it, to delete it, or to come off the email list, and we'll take care of it.

Kids

This site is for truck and trailer owners. It isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect anything from them.

Changes

If we change what we collect, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
