Buying a Used Fifth Wheel Hitch

You can save serious money. Here's how to do it safely.

The Good News

Fifth wheel hitches are built like tanks. A well-maintained used hitch can last decades. People sell them when they sell their trailer, downsize their truck, or just want something different. Their loss, your gain.

Where to Find Used Hitches

Facebook Marketplace

Best selection, can see seller's profile, easy to arrange local pickup.

Craigslist

Good deals, but be careful with scams. Local pickup only.

RV Forums

IRV2, RV.net classifieds. Sellers usually know what they have.

eBay

Buyer protection, but shipping heavy hitches is expensive.

What to Inspect

Check these before you buy

1

Jaw Wear

Look inside the jaws. Some wear marks are normal. Deep grooves, cracks, or chunks missing = walk away.

2

Locking Mechanism

Work the handle. It should move smoothly and lock firmly. Stiff, sticky, or loose = needs attention.

3

Cracks in Welds or Frame

Inspect all welds carefully. Any crack = do not buy. No exceptions. This is a safety issue.

4

Rust

Surface rust is usually fine — it can be cleaned and painted. Structural rust (pitting, flaking, holes) = pass.

5

Head Pivot

The head should pivot/tilt smoothly. Binding or grinding = worn bushings or bearings.

6

Slider Rails (If Applicable)

Should slide smoothly. Check for bent rails, damaged rollers, or missing pins.

Questions to Ask the Seller

  • What brand and model is it?
  • What's the weight rating (GTW)?
  • How long did you own it?
  • How often did you tow?
  • Why are you selling?
  • Was it ever in an accident or damaged?
  • Do you have the manual or mounting hardware?

What's a Fair Price?

Expect 40-60% off retail

Used hitches typically sell for 40-60% of new price, depending on condition and age.

  • Like new (1-2 years): 50-60% of MSRP
  • Good condition (3-5 years): 40-50% of MSRP
  • Older but functional: 30-40% of MSRP

Look up the new price online to know if you're getting a deal.
