Tailgate Solutions for Fifth Wheels
What to do with your tailgate when there's a trailer in the way.
The Problem
When you tow a fifth wheel, the front of the trailer hangs over your truck bed. Your stock tailgate can't close — it hits the trailer. You need a solution.
Your Options
1. Leave Tailgate Off
FreeThe simplest solution. Remove your tailgate and store it in the trailer (or at home) while towing.
Pros
- • Free
- • No modifications
- • Maximum clearance
Cons
- • Looks unfinished
- • Stuff can fall out
- • Must store the tailgate somewhere
2. Open/Down Position
FreeLeave your tailgate attached but in the open (down) position while towing. Some trailers have enough clearance for this.
Pros
- • Free
- • Tailgate stays with truck
- • Quick to put back up
Cons
- • Not always enough clearance
- • Can hit trailer when turning
- • Looks awkward
3. Vented/Louvered Tailgate
$200-400Replacement tailgates with cutouts that allow the trailer to hang over while the tailgate stays "closed." Looks intentional.
Pros
- • Clean, finished look
- • Designed for fifth wheels
- • Keeps bed somewhat enclosed
Cons
- • Cost
- • Must swap tailgates
- • Store original somewhere
Brands: Stromberg Carlson, Go Industries
4. 5th Wheel Tailgate (Open Center)
$150-350Replacement tailgate with a large center cutout for the trailer overhang. Simple and effective.
Pros
- • Purpose-built design
- • Easy swap
- • Looks clean
Cons
- • Large opening when not towing
- • Stuff can fall out center
5. Folding/Split Tailgate
$300-600Tailgates that fold in the middle or have removable center sections. Best of both worlds — full tailgate when not towing, clearance when you are.
Pros
- • Versatile
- • Full tailgate when needed
- • No separate storage
Cons
- • More expensive
- • More complex
- • Potential for wear/failure
6. Cargo Net/Bar
$30-100Not a tailgate replacement, but a cheap way to keep stuff in your bed when tailgate is off. Net or bar stretches across the opening.
Pros
- • Cheap
- • Easy install/remove
- • Keeps items contained
Cons
- • Not as secure as tailgate
- • Doesn't look as finished
What Most People Do
Casual/Occasional Towers
Remove tailgate and store it. Simple, free, works fine.
Frequent/Fulltime Towers
Buy a dedicated fifth wheel tailgate. Cleaner look, more convenient.
Best of Both Worlds
Get a folding/split tailgate if budget allows. Full tailgate when not towing, clearance when you are.
What About the Backup Camera?
Important consideration
Many newer trucks have backup cameras integrated into the tailgate handle. If you remove or replace the tailgate, you lose the camera.
Solutions:
- • Some replacement tailgates have camera provisions
- • Mount a separate wireless backup camera
- • Use mirrors (you're looking at trailer anyway)
- • Trailer-mounted cameras are common for RVs
